At True Eye Experts, hyperopia is one of the many vision conditions we treat. Read on to learn more about farsightedness and how True Eye Experts can help you achieve clearer vision.

What Causes Farsightedness?

Farsightedness, like nearsightedness, is a refractive vision condition caused by an abnormality in the shape of the eye or a misshapen cornea. Typically, the eye focuses images directly onto the retina — but if your eye is too short or your cornea too flat, it will focus the images beyond the retina, resulting in farsightedness.

While farsightedness isn’t quite as common as nearsightedness, if still affects up to a quarter of the population and poses different issues at different ages. For school-age children, it might be difficult to read and write, making studying and tests a struggle; for adults, it can cause problems with daily tasks at work. If left untreated, farsightedness can lead to headaches and eye strain, as well as difficulty performing everyday tasks.

How is Farsightedness Treated?

Like most refractive errors, farsightedness can usually be treated with corrective eyewear like glasses or contact lenses. When you come to True Eye Experts, we’ll use our cutting-edge technology and True Eye Exam to assess your vision and the overall health of your eyes. Then we’ll generate a precise prescription and then help you find the eyewear that fits your needs.

Hyperopia can sometimes be caused by an internal eye issue, and even though this occurs rarely, that’s one of the reasons True Eye Experts provides a comprehensive eye exam: to rule out secondary causes of farsightedness.

Farsightedness can also be corrected with LASIK eye surgery, for which we provide pre- and post-operative care in cooperation with our local trusted eye surgeons. In some cases, farsightedness can even be corrected with orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, which uses rigid contact lenses to correct the curvature of the cornea overnight, resulting in clearer vision over the course of the day.

Age-Related Farsightedness

Farsightedness can also be age-related, in which case it’s referred to as presbyopia. As time goes on, the front lens of the eye becomes more rigid, which causes farsightedness in older adults — even if they never before needed glasses or contacts to correct their vision.

At True Eye Experts, one of the solutions we offer for presbyopia is the use of multifocal lenses. These lenses will allow you to preserve the quality of your distance vision while providing clearer near vision, so you don’t have to take your glasses on and off when looking up from close-up tasks.
